Poseidon was sitting on his throne, keeping watch over his sea. In the distance, he heard a cry for help. Poseidon thought that he had recognized the voice. He heard again, louder and clearer this time. This time he knew who's voice it belonged to. It had to be his son, Polyphemus. Poseidon listened closely to hear what what ailing his son. He heard Polyphemus say that he has been blinded by someone by the name of Odysseus. Poseidon was distraught at the thought of a mere mortal blinding his son. Poseidon heard Polyphemus pray to him to curse Odysseus and his men. Poseidon would have gladly curse Odysseus right there and then, but Zeus had also heard Polyphemus's prayer. Zeus begged Poseidon to forgive Odysseus and leave him and his men alone. Poseidon thought it over and ultimately decided to ignore Zeus and put a horrible curse on Odysseus. Poseidon explained to Zeus that Polyphemus is his son and that since Odysseus attacked family, he had to be punished. Zeus and the other gods agreed to not lend any help to Odysseus on his voyage home.
